The perception that people were getting away with crime due to the insanity defense led to this travesty of justice. The truth is less than 1% plead insanity and of that figure only a few of these requests are granted. An entire system was changed because of this misperception. Countless of innocent(sick) individuals were literally thrown to the lions (prison) rather than getting the medical treatment they needed. The drain on correctional resources was ultimately going to catch up with them. Too bad they didn't utilize the methods of planned change.
