Thanks student paper!

... for making it look like I got arrested for meth.

This will be great for my career, I'm sure!

At least it's not in the online version!

  1. 8 whole meth arrests? Wow meth is clearly a huge social problem in Watauga county. Now I'm afraid I might get jumped by a crazed meth head in a dark alley on king st!!

  2. My roommate has this innate need to pick up every copy of the school and local newspaper...so at the beginning of the semester, I was eager to point out that the meth story was very misleading. Last week when she came home, she pointed at your picture and said "Look at the latest dude to get arrested for meth. Good thing it's not a problem!" I didn't bother telling her it was actually Dr. Robinson - but the only thing the story did was to reinforce people's ideas that meth is a huge problem in Watauga County and is something we should all be very afraid of. When stories about the same subject continue to be published, even if they have been factually proven to be irrelevant, every time they pop up in the local news, it just adds to people's beliefs of what they choose to agree with. Therefore, it seems as though the media conditions people to pay attention to these types of stories and, while they may be confronted with differing facts, will usually resort to believing what is in the news constantly as opposed to a conflicting account about the same piece.

  3. At least it looks like you were smiling! This is just an example, sadly by our own school, of how media outlets go to extremes to garner attention to their stories. Our book talks about, and we discussed in class how reporters go 'live from the scene,' when the accident/crime may have happened quite sometime before they arrived. They try to give the story more context and relate it to something to grab people's attention. Maybe the school paper placed your picture there because they knew a lot of people would recognize you and pay attention to the article! Sorry you got used!!

  4. Only 8 meth arrests?!? I thought that officer that was interviewed a few months ago said they were getting calls everyday that it was everywhere. If that was true then why are there only 8?
