Will the Courts Save the Dreamers?
By Marjorie Cohn, Truthout | News Analysis
With 17 states filing two lawsuits over Trump's DACA rescission, it is more likely that the fate of the Dreamers will be decided in the US Supreme Court rather than in Congress, which would have to defy years of history to agree on comprehensive immigration reform. But if Trump gets to appoint one more justice to the court, DACA may well be struck down.
I think the for-profit news media does not report on topics of such controversy because it doesn't pull in a large audience as opposed to something violent and less political. Another reason is these stories require research and that costs money, and why would they do that when they can just find a crime scene of some murder and interview a cop and have more views from that.
ReplyDeleteThese stories would not be presented in mainstream media for several reasons. The first being that they require too much research and time to report on properly. The second reason is that many if not all of these stories are political and controversial which the media is less inclined to engage with due to their relationships with the government and need to increase profit. Mainstream media is not about properly informing the public. They serve to make money and to sensationalize stories.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that these stories aren't considered mainstream is they are very controversial but don't have an appeal to a large present of the population. Also it would take a tremendous amount of resources to cover the stories in a way that would actually tell us the full story.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are a smaller non-profit organization, the freedom to report on whatever you see fit makes it much easier to report on politically charged stories without the worry of losing any of your subscriber base. They are able to write in languages that much more obviously display their political leanings. Larges corporations such as FOX or CNN have obvious political tendencies but (at least try to be) more subtle in those ideals for fear of losing a potential customer.
