The only reason these stories are covered in the news is because they all have some sort of negative condensation with them. For example it is either someone died, negative effects of drugs, and some form of sexual assault. The news chose these headlines because they knew it would catch the attention of its viewers and sell more. It also has vulnerable victims such as children and women/moms in the headlines that draws in more attention. In the end, these are all topics that people do not need to know. It does not affect my life in anyway.
These stories are covered in the news because they cover the things American's seem to be interested in the most: Sex,violence, drugs, and terrorism. We learned in the class that these things sell, and seeing how the major news companies are owned by for-profit companies, it's no surprise that these stories (that do not relate to everyone nationally), are headlining.
These stories are just stories that sell for some reason, but because they sell they will be considered newsworthy in the eyes of the news media. Like normal these things are completely random and have nothing to do with our daily live and some of them use a few common narratives that we see everyday in the news. until these news organization are non-profit we will continue to have nothing but entertainment where our news should be.
These are all considered newsworthy because they are currently what the public is interested in. They all have different stories, but share the same negative message. If you think about how a couple survived the Vegas attack, but then die in car crash it will capture the attention of the audience so they feel some sort of emotion. All of the headlines will get a reaction from the viewers which is what the news media wants. It doesn’t matter if the articles are legit important to people in areas that are close by, they will receive national news coverage because people are interested in them.
Each of these stories meets the five criteria dictated by Steve Chermak. These criteria are 1)the nature of the crime, 2)demographic factors of those involved in the crime, 3)a unique feature of the crime, 4)salience of the crime in current events, and 5)a characteristic of the media outlet itself. These elements dictate whether or not stories are presented by media. Each of these can be broken down and analyzed. The first is unique, horrifying and rare. Body parts are not usually found in coolers. The second is particularly newsworthy mostly due to the age of the jumper. The third has a salience due to the time of year. The fourth is newsworthy because of the child in the back seat and because of the potential other outcomes that could of occurred. The fifth story is because of the uniqueness of survivors of another horrific crime surviving and then dying soon after in an accident. Gives the consumer the notion that one can die anytime. The sixth and seventh are newsworthy mostly because they involve sex and because of the characteristic of the individuals involved. These are just one example per story but each involve examples of each criteria.
These stories made the news because they could happen to everyday people. they are meant to scare the population. around halloween every year, there is something about poisoned candy. the fact that one can overdose on licorice is absurd. The two sex cases are very far fetched and rarely happen, but when they do, you can be sure to find them in the news.
We can find that these are considered news worthy because of two things. First these stories are about everyday people. Not saying these can happen to everyone but in the sense that it could be anyone. Also it's what some people feed off of. With violence sex, and crime are the hot topics in the world we live in.
These "newsworthy" stories are really nothing more than statistical anomalies. Never the less, they get people to click on their article which generates revenue for their company (which everyone knows that is their main goal). The headlines are shocking and get people interested because it has to either do with something violent or something so unusual that someone can't resist clicking on their article. The fact of the matter however is that lack of context about just how likely something like ODing on licorice is.
