Afghans Avenge Florida Koran Burning, Killing 12

These people are foolish to kill fellow citizens just because someone burned their sacred book.

And the Mullahs who encouraged it are also idiots.

There, I said it.

But the man in Florida who organized the burning of Korans -- supposedly a religious leader himself -- was warned by the US government not to do this. He was told that this would happen and he did it anyway.

Which is like yelling FIRE! in a crowded movie theater.

From the article:

Terry Jones, the Florida pastor, caused an international uproar by threatening to burn the Koran last year on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Among others, the overall commander of forces in Afghanistan, Gen. David H. Petraeus, had warned at that time that such an action could provoke violence in Afghanistan and could endanger American troops. Mr. Jones subsequently promised not to burn a Koran, but he nonetheless presided over a mock trial and then the burning of the Koran at his small church in Gainesville, Fla., on March 20, with only 30 worshipers attending."

And now US troops may pay for this act of foolishness with their lives, too.

I personally believe that if Jesus were on Earth today, he would walk up to this man, turn his back on him, and walk away in embarrassment.

  1. I think that this is ridiculous. First of all, Muslims did not attack us on 9/11, they were extremists and they were terrorists. Therefore not the same. It is not right to burn a religions sacred text. Second of all, he was told not to do it because it would bring danger to the troops in Afghanistan. You think a religious American would take this into account, but obviously not! It is awful that Americans were killed because this Christian "extremist" decided it would be a good ideal to burn the Koran.

  2. And this is why when you give attention to extremists on ANY side, you just fan the flames of hatred(literally and figuratively.)I believe strongly in our freedom of speech, I just wish everyone had the sense, respect, and common decency to use it wisely. I'll go ahead and make an assumption that this man doesn't really care about the people harmed, albeit indirectly, by his actions because he would not have done so otherwise.

I googled a video to try to see the event (because sadly I have a distant in-law who lives just outside of Gainesville and would have not been surprised to see her craziness in the crowd) and it was a total media circus...for 30 people. In the brief video I saw, there were more media people than there were attendees! Could someone please explain to me why a nation of hundreds of millions of people can be represented by 30?? Can we say media consolidation? Attention to the unusual events?

And in defense of Muslims, (in general, not the ones who killed people, obviously) I'm sure there are some Christians out there who would react in the same way...just read the comments under any article about an atheist billboard goign up in their town.

  3. I read another article on the guy who did the burning, and how he was receiving death threats. When asked about hte people who were killed in response to this he said something to the effect that he had a heavy heart about the matter, but his religious beliefs were more important than the lives of these people. I have never heard of religious intolerance being promoted in the bible, quite the contrary I think acceptance was preached. This man is just feeding off of the media attention he is getting, if him and his "followers" had just burned their Koran and no one else saw it, that would have been the end of it but instead we watched and made him bigger. This man should have to go toe the families of the 12 people and explain why his views are more important than the lives of each of their loved ones.

  4. Don't you just love how religion has become a political thing. Burn a Koran? That want start any problems. And then he wonders why he receives threats. These people are not Christian. I hate what politics and war has done to religion. Acceptance is the best way. People from the South don't hate people from the North because we have different accents and usually dress different. Just because someone practices a different religion does not make you are more right in your beliefs. If Islam was the prodominent religion in the United States there would be people fighting against Christians. I think the media has shown us so many images of war and death and link it with Islam that it has become engrained in us that Muslims are are horrible people who want nothing more than to kill Americans. I just don't think that's true. No religion promotes war and killing people and defiantly does not promote hate. It is quite the opposite. I do think that there are some extremeous that associate themselves with Islam and violence but there are also many Christian organization like this as well. I just don't get how as a society we tolerate these kinds of acts. If Jesus did come back I really dont think these "crazy" Christians would be on his list.
