How newsworthy is a celebrity arrest?

Apparently, it is very newsworthy ... or else why would CNN show you this:

See Justin Bieber get frisked in jail See Justin Bieber get frisked in jail

And so now you may understand why many criticize the media for focusing on trivial things rather than serious news.

What is BREAKING news?

Imagine talking to a member of Congress about NSA spying, and interrupting her for ...

Now you know what is wrong with the news in America.

Honestly, who cares about such "trivial news?"

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Just look at what counts as news

... as in newsworthy.

As in it is important that you know this.

So you can be informed about the world and make sense of it.

Look at these stories and then ask yourself:

Are these stories I need to know about?

Do they increase my understanding of the world?

Do they make me more informed?

Do they at least make me better comprehend the things that actually threaten me?

If not, why are they in the news?

Can you really believe THIS is the lead story in the news?

British royal baby finally arrives

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William welcome their first child. The baby weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces. FULL STORY

One of the main themes of the book is that the new focus on trivial matters (in addition to random crimes) in order to keep us fixated on things that don't matter so that things that do will be decided by elites.

Well, what could be more trivial than the birth of a child who is born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who were born to people who long ago took power and oppressed the masses based on the subjective claim that they were endowed by God to be rulers and thus had more food and land and all other resources?

These are the same people whose abuses became so outrageous that we broke away from them are fought wars in order to be our own independent nation and whose crimes are listed in our very own Declaration of Independence.

This child is a descendant of those people.

And those people own about $1billion in wealth, yet rely on the people of the UK for security, food, shelter, etc. even while cutting salaries for the masses.

Sure, I will celebrate that! Not!

Yep, she is still here. And so is she.

Amazingly, stories about Sarah Palin still make the news. She is still here.

But even more amazing is that her daughter, Bristol, also remains in the news. Like on the front page of CNN.com.

In some ways, I can understand the focus on Sarah Palin. She was after all, the vice presidential candidate for a major political party. And the Governor of Alaska (at least until she quit!).

Her repeated gaffes alone show she is not smart enough to be a major office holder. She's like George W. Bush in a skirt. And look at the mess he left us.

But at least her presence in the news can be justified.

Explain to me how we are focused on her daughter?

What has she done?

* Got pregnant as a teenager in spite of being raised in a household that preached abstinence.
*Had a baby out of wedlock.

* Appeared on popular TV show (Dancing with the Stars) showing she could not really dance (You don't disagree, do you?)

Now she has a book out about her life, short and uneventful as it is. Making hundreds of thousands of dollars there.

And she's been traveling the country, getting paid tens of thousands of dollars per speech, talking about the importance of abstinence (Oh come on now, surely you can see how ridiculous that is!).

This is one of the major stories on CNN.com, right behind the debt crisis and the mass murder in Norway. Even during times like this, trivial news makes an appearance.

From CNN. com:

Bristol Palin says she's optimistic about her mother's chances if the former Alaska governor decides to run for president.

"I think she's so smart and I think she could debate anyone and do very well," Palin said in an interview with HLN's "Dr. Drew" that aired Thursday night.

"I think that people will be talking about my family and her and everyone else, no matter what we're doing," she added.

When the show's host, Dr. Drew Pinsky, asked whether she liked the attention, Palin said she had mixed feelings.

"I don't know how to feel about it. I think there's awesome opportunities that come with it, but then I also think there's lots of drawbacks and lots of negatives towards it," she said. "But I think whatever she (Sarah Palin) does will be right for our family and right for herself."

Palin's life changed dramatically when her mother, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, became John McCain's vice presidential running mate in 2008.

Shortly afterward, the revelation that Bristol Palin was 17 and pregnant put a national spotlight on her personal life.

In her new memoir, "Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far," Bristol Palin -- now 20 --writes about lying to her parents so she could go on a camping trip with friends -- a night that ended with the teenager losing her virginity to her boyfriend, Levi Johnston, while getting drunk off wine coolers.

Later in the book, Bristol walks readers through her unwanted pregnancy with Johnston, revealing details on their shaky relationship over the years.

On Thursday, she told Pinsky that being a teen mom to her son, Trip, was tough.

"My life, my teenage years were cut completely short. I was on the fast track to adulthood just in an instant because of that one decision," she said. "And Trip is just the love of my life. He is everything to me. But do I wish that he had a dad that was involved in his life? Absolutely. And do I wish that I had an education and a real career path? Absolutely."

Even after the 2008 election, Bristol didn't shy away from the spotlight. She competed on "Dancing With the Stars" last year, drawing support from fans but also sharp criticism; one man reportedly shot his television when she made it to another week of the competition.

"I just think that it's so strange that they could have so much hate over a dance show," she said.
In July 2010, Bristol announced her engagement to Johnston on the front page of US Weekly magazine.

That -- Bristol told Pinsky -- was "the biggest regret of my life."

"The day (the magazine) came out, he (Johnston) comes to me and he says, 'Hey this girl's pregnant and it might be my baby.' ... So then from that day forward I was like, I'm just done with that. Trip doesn't deserve this (from) his dad and I don't deserve that (from) a potential husband," she said.

In Thursday's interview, Bristol also addressed a more recent controversy -- whether she had plastic surgery. She reiterated previous denials of that accusation, saying an oral surgeon operated on her jaw in December to correct a longstanding problem.

"I'm so sick of people talking about it and I'm so sick of appearance being an issue," she said.
But despite the increased scrutiny, Bristol says she's grateful her celebrity has given her a chance to speak about important topics, like teen pregnancy prevention.

"With this book, I really do hope that other young girls will see all the foolish decisions ... and they can learn something from the mistakes that I made," she said.

"I'm just so passionate about it, just warning other girls that it's not an accessory on your hip," she added.

About the guy at the gym

This morning I was at one of the beautiful gyms at ASU. And now I remember why I normally wear headphones .... not because of the terrible music they play (that's bad enough), but because of the loud mouth people that occasionally sit in there and tell their life stories instead of working out.

Don't get me wrong, this guy was muscular. He works out. But he had a small head (sort of like the guy to the left).

This guy almost did not stop talking the whole time he was in there. And since the gym was nearly empty, it was very quiet. Thus, his shouting to the girl he was talking to could easily be heard by me, even all the way across the gym.

I remember one thing he yelled to her: "You don't have an Internet connection at your place? Or a cell phone? How do you know what is going on in the world???!!!???!!!"

His next sentence was, "Like in the Casey Anthony trial."

That's enough said right there, isn't it?

Murder a hamster, make the news!

Oh brother.

Should the words "hamster" and "felony" ever be used together?

OMG is right!

Look at the link address of the article.

Now, I might say, "Gosh, who cares?"

But obviously people do.

Just more evidence of our fascination with the trivial, and how even that is often linked to criminal justice.

It's my birthday! Thanks for present (a gun I will use to kill you)

Dad buys his son a gun for his birthday.

Boy uses gun to kill his dad.

Not sure this counts as trivial news.

But it counts as "random, violent" news.

Do people outside of South Carolina (or even in the state) really need to know about this story?

Why is this national news?

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/18/south.carolina.family.shot/index.html?hpt=T2

And dead cows too?

See the connection?

You know, to the woman who slapped a horse?

Now there are 200 dead cows. And some people think it is a Biblical sign that the end is near.

And it is NATIONAL news!

(I keep waiting for him to say, "Eat Mur Chikn" or something like that).

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/17/florida.horse.slapping/index.html?hpt=Sbin

So THIS is what is important?

A woman slaps a police horse.

And it is NATIONAL news!
