Why is THIS news?

Among the top stories in the news today is this headline from CNN:

Son of Alabama assistant coach shot and killed

Why is this shooting news when other gun murders happened dozens of times over the weekend?

It could be because Alabama is the number 1 team in the nation? And because their first game this year was the most watched opening game ever? That is CNN's story just below the one about the shooting.

Then, there is this story about a police officer during a DUI stop telling a white woman, "Remember, we only kill black people."

Meanwhile, over at Fox News, one of the lead stories is this one:

'JUST DOING MY JOB'
Report: News photographer shot by cop at traffic stop

And this!

Man tied to $500M heist faces jail in separate case

Here the news show they don't know the difference between prison and jail! Wow!

So, why are these stories NEWS?

A look at the leading stories in the news

Israel continues its attacks on Gaza, so you'd assume that'd be the lead story today. Let's see ...

From CNN:

BREAKING NEWS

Flares, explosions, gunfire in Gaza

Israel and Palestinians traded blame after a blast at refugee camp that Gaza officials said killed 10. A hospital also was hit. Five Israeli soldiers died Monday. FULL STORY

From Fox News:

From Washington Post:

From New York Times:

So, yes, there are other events in the nation and world that are top stories in major news outlets.

It is interesting that only one of these stories is about crime or criminal justice, too.

Terrorism back in the news

In case you had forgotten, terrorism is still real. And the news is still interested in it.

Well, at least some of the agencies are. Like Fox News:

ISIS destroys shrines, churches and mosques, may be targeting Mecca

AL QAEDA-INSPIRED TERROR GROUP ISIS is leaving a path of destroyed churches, shrines and mosques in its wake as it storms across Syria and Iraq, and has even apparently set its sights on Mecca — Islam's holiest site.
  • Terror plot targeting Eiffel Tower, Louvre foiled, French police say

  • And USA Today:

Which is the most important TOP STORY?

Examine the following top stories from the news media. Which is the most important, because it impacts the most people?

More shootings, more shootings, more shootings ...

    And more mass killings.

But Fox News ignores them, since they were not committed by Muslims. I mean, read it and see what you think!

Meanwhile, if these folks were Muslims, we'd call it terrorism. So why don't we?

After all, "according to the New America Foundation, as of April of this year, 21 people had been killed in the United States in attacks motivated by Islamic extremism since 9/11. Meanwhile, 34 people had been killed by right-wing extremist attacks during the same time period." See?

Looks to me like even school shootings are a greater threat than terrorism!

Isn't that interesting? Because in this case, they do NOT see lawlessness, even though that is precisely what it is. Instead, they see an American standing up for his rights, even though he denies the right of the USA even to exist! (though he still rides his horse holding an American flag).

It's Martin Luther King day but ...

... if you watch TV you STILL won't know why.

Incredibly, this article was written in 1995--1995!--yet nothing has changed in terms of how the media cover the man.

It's become a TV ritual: Every year in mid-January, around the time of Martin Luther King's birthday, we get perfunctory network news reports about "the slain civil rights leader."

The remarkable thing about this annual review of King's life is that several years — his last years — are totally missing, as if flushed down a memory hole.

What TV viewers see is a closed loop of familiar file footage: King battling desegregation in Birmingham (1963); reciting his dream of racial harmony at the rally in Washington (1963); marching for voting rights in Selma, Alabama (1965); and finally, lying dead on the motel balcony in Memphis (1968).

An alert viewer might notice that the chronology jumps from 1965 to 1968. Yet King didn't take a sabbatical near the end of his life. In fact, he was speaking and organizing as diligently as ever.
Almost all of those speeches were filmed or taped. But they're not shown today on TV.

    Why?

It's because national news media have never come to terms with what Martin Luther King Jr. stood for during his final years.

    ___________________________________

So, what did he stand for?

Things too radical to appear on TV apparently.

Yet, he still has a national holiday and a monument on the mall in Washington, DC. Even as our actions as a nation dishonor what he stood for as a man, especially in those last two years of his life.

Read the rest to see what you are missing. Warning, you won't see this in the news today! Human rights ... economic justice ... redistribution of wealth ... anti-war ...

Here is how he is being covered:

    His lesser-known gems
There are the iconic speeches and writings: "I Have a Dream" and "Letter From Birmingham Jail." But MLK's "overlooked gems" spotlight his hidden side. FULL STORY
