Violent crime is still going down, according to the FBI.
But even criminologists really cannot say why, especially during an economic downturn which historically tends to drive crime down.
From the article: "The FBI report does not give reasons for the drop in crime, but criminologists have recently indicated an aging population, along with ramped-up law enforcement, have contributed to the decline in recent years. The trend has surprised experts who have historically seen crime increase during difficult economic periods."
Aging population I can buy. Better or more law enforcement? Not so much. Studies simply do not support this assertion, and most factors that impact crime are outside of criminal justice anyway.
