Daylight saving time starts Sunday
Take heed if you have anything scheduled for Sunday: Daylight saving time begins this weekend. Clocks will be moved forward one hour when the clock strikes 2 a.m. Sunday.


Rain water cuts off animal shelter
The rushing sound of water overpowers the barking, at least from the street level. That's as close as most people could get Wednesday and Thursday to the Watauga County Humane Society:  The bridge at the Casey Lane entrance became part of the creek. 

Dozing driver snared on embankment
A drowsy driver was awakened Thursday when his vehicle exited the highway and ran up a bank off U.S. 321 near Tweetsie.

2011-12 Teachers of the Year announced
Nine Watauga County Schools educators have been recognized as Teachers of the Year.

Vilas man arrested for indecent liberties
A Vilas man has been charged with taking indecent liberties with a minor after a month-long investigation by Alamance County authorities.

Court takes town's side
A Superior Court judge ruled Feb. 25 in favor of the town of Boone in a legal snarl with Templeton Properties, now reaching into its fifth year.

Courting disaster?
Few people enter the Watauga County Courthouse because they want to be there. Disagreement and conflict are inherent at the courthouse, and the risks that environment creates are numerous.

Area veterans need sponsors
A group of local World War II veterans is preparing for a trip certain to rouse patriotism and reflection. A local contingent will travel in May to Washington, D.C., through Honor Flight, a free program that shuttles veterans to the national monuments that memorialize their service.

Boone police seek purse thief
Watauga County Crimestoppers is seeking information on a purse theft that occurred Sunday evening in Boone.

Boone woman arrested for check fraud
Theresa Ann Horton, 51, of Boone, was charged with two counts of felony forgery and two counts of felony uttering a forged endorsement.

There's treasure in the ground
The Watauga County Solid Waste and Recycling department is turning trash into cash. In four to six weeks, a long-awaited system will become operational that converts the methane gas created from decomposing trash into electricity.

DBDA loses leader
The Downtown Business Development Association, a nonprofit whose future has been in jeopardy in the last several months, has now lost its director. Mary Baker resigned last Wednesday, after about four and a half years in various roles with the association, to take another job in Boone. She has served as director since May 2010.


Watauga grows 20 percent in past 10 years
U.S. Census data released Wednesday shows that Watauga County's population has increased by almost 20 percent in the last decade. The county had 51,079 residents as of April 1, 2010, up from 42,695 when the data was gathered in 2000.


Vehicle wrecks on black ice
A woman was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning after hitting black ice and wrecking on N.C. 105.

Employee charged with Kmart theft
A Kmart employee was arrested Saturday and charged with stealing video game consoles, games and other electronics from the store.
