Man takes box cutters on a plane

No, he was not a terrorist.

And they were for his work. He just forgot to take them out of his carry-on bag. (and screeners did not "see" them -- they have been sent for "remedial training")

So when they fell out, the plane was grounded, all passengers were taken off the plane, and he was arrested.

Even though this has nothing to do with terrorism and nothing to do with 9/11, it is still national news.

Notice that the article says nothing about the horrific state of airport security. Thus, it lacks the context we need to understand the real important issues facing us.

Maybe we should just ban carry-on luggage?!?!?!

  1. Fear equals ratings. The news makes us believe the entire country is in chaos when actually its not that bad. This doesn't make the nation scared of this guy, but it recollects every moment of 9/11 where one incidnent caused a decade long (and still going) new standard of flying safely on a plane. Although the percentage of this happening on any given ride is minimum.

  2. How much damage can that box cutter do? A person can do the same damage with a cell phone if you know how to. That is what was used as a weapon more than anything during the 9/11 attacks. The knowledge of how to fly planes. How many accounts are there of terrorists using box cutters to take over a plane? How many accounts are there of terrorists using toothpaste or shampoo to make some type of explosives? If they were that smart, we should stop selling these items. However, we are not at that point.

All of this is due to fear and fear equals profits. But not for citizens. The TSA is responsible for the purchase of the screening technology and for operating and maintaining this technology. They also provide for the security officers to use this technology. This is where our tax money goes to. The airlines share the costs associated with these security measures. We now have to pay more for flying. We, the citizens, have to pay the price.

  3. The Patriot Act is supposed to protect us from this, but yet stuff like this gets on a plane. If this was a terrorist the passengers were screwed. All this money for airplane security and stuff like this happens and this isnt the first thing to pass the screeners. This is the reason that the 6 year old was pat down before she entered the plane. Thanks for wasting my hard earned tax money.
