Random crime in the news today

... just as with every day.

For example, from Fox News today:

  1. The guy from Texas who held the Fowler woman captive was interesting. It should not necessarily be making national news, not unless Maxwell was a felon on Americas most wanted or something. The story was entertaining to read about but She survived with what seemed to be limited injuries. Its a fantastic, yet archetypal story to have an arsonist, kidnapper who has a house with a trap door and a hidden room meant only for torturing women he likes. Its a remarkable story that she survived but it has no significant effect on you, me or anyone else not living in their community. I don't see narratives like this becoming any less prominent anytime soon either. I sat down and read the whole story and I don't even care. American media news corporations, are playing off of America's slightly lengthier attention spans for violent news stories. We will continue to watch it as if it was a made for t.v. movie that never ends.

  2. In the case of the Colorado Boy, the story reports on a twelve year old boy who is accused of killing his parents and injuring two siblings. The media is reporting on a type of crime that is very rare and violent in nature. Serious types of crimes are supposed to generate more media coverage. In Chaper three, they say "if it bleeds, it leads". The heinous nature of the crime made it even more likely to be reported by the media. In Chapter four, they discuss how the media portray juveniles. The media is more likely to report on juveniles when it involves murder, even though it is very rare. The twelve year old boy shot and killed his mother and father. The media report that the boy also tried to hurt his five year old sister with a knife and stabbed and shot his nine year old brother.
