Wht we can't stop watching triviliaty

From CNN's "Cover Story" about why we keep tuning in to learn about celebrity nonsense.

"In 24 hours, actor Charlie Sheen managed a marathon of appearances that kept viewers enthralled.

"The troubled 'Two and a Half Men' star was interviewed early Monday on 'Good Morning America' and 'Today,' and later on TMZ's live webcast, talk radio program 'Loose Cannons' and CNN's 'Piers Morgan Tonight.' The next day, he chatted on Howard Stern's radio show. He's also on the cover of the new People magazine.

Thankfully, I did not see any of it, hear any of it, or get polluted by any of it.

But the article explains why this stuff is so popular.

  1. This is a great example of what we have being learning about the term "trivial" the so called soft or lifestyle about celebrities. As we all know this type of coverage in the media has increase, because they get more audience.
And it is entertainment for a lot of people, in this case Charlie Sheen is an icon of the media right now, he has made a lot of appearances lately that I am sure the media is making a lot of profit.
In the article there were some people that criticized his appearances because he is getting a lot of attention, something that interfere with his recovery, others think that the media is this case is exploiting him by taking advantage of his situation.
As we discuss in class, when there is scandal, drama, and drug addiction in a celebrity life that definitely makes NEWS...and of course a lot of people will watch it.
The problem is that who cares what is going on his life, is not that we don't have to care about others but he is a Celebrity another guy with addiction problems, what are we getting out of it...nothing absolutely nothing. The only thing that we are getting out of, is distraction from real issues that matter to us as citizens, something that the media should be doing...

  2. I very much agree with the above comment. who cares if charlie sheen is a bad father or likes to do more lines of coke than he can count. the more important questions in all this should be why are the american public giving him so much attention for this? He certainly doesn't give a damn about anything, why would we give a damn about him or his life? Also, i should point out that this drug addicted, porn star loving guy makes 2 million dollars an episode on the CBS sitcom, two and a half men. No wonder he has problems, he has more money than he knows what to do with.

  3. I completely agree. Why does it matter that one person has a drug problem? News flash: Thousands struggle with drug problems everyday, yet they dont recieve treatment or any coverage like Charlie Sheen. He recieves coverage because he is a celebrity. We keep powering these people's egos because we keep putting them on front page news. It is not a real issue any person should be concerned about. Get the hell over it, he's a druggie. WHO CARES!? The news needs to focus on real news like Wisconsin, Saudi Arabia, and Japan. There are way bigger issues that we need to be aware of rather than how much coke Charlie Sheen snorted last weekend. I bet if you asked most Americans what was going on in other countries or even in our country like Wisconsin they would have no idea. However, if you asked which celebrities were in trouble because of drugs or stealing jewelry they would know. So who is to blame? People or the media?
