Dead bodies. Child victim. Duffel bag. Trash can.

Clearly, that is going to be national news.

Even though it happened in Massachusetts and is one of only 16,000 likely murders this year.

There's even a video of the scene for you. I wonder what that adds to the newsworthiness of this story???

  1. This article, is an ideal example of what crime the media are most likely to report on. There is the perfect victim: a mother and young son. It is a strange crime because they were stuffed in duffle bags in dumpsters. That's not something you hear about everyday. It is interesting however that the woman and child are immigrants from Ecuador, because usually the victims in the news are White, Americans. Even though this is a gruesome murder, it is not necessary to have national coverage. It would be important for the community of Plymouth, MA to hear about this case. However, it has no effect on anyone in any other state.

  2. This story was newsworthy because the nature of the offense was violent. With both the mother and kid were killed by blunt force trauma to the head. The demographic factors of the victims also makes this newsworthy. The victims were a mom and her young son. The uniqueness of the crime made the story stand out. You just don't hear about a body being stuffed in a duffel bag.
I also found it interesting that they mentioned that she was a mother of three but the media did not say anything about the other two kids. Where are they?
