Scientists warn of 'tsunami of obesity' as Western lifestyles spread across the globe

For decades, we've sat on our couches, being constantly bombarded by advertisements for highly sweetened and high fat foods, especially fast food (think Super Size).

And we've consistently gotten fatter and fatter.

Now, our lifetsyle is spreading across the globe.

Yeah,

I know, I know.

We have a choice about what we eat. Of course we do.

But "choice" is what we decide to do, like eat a healthy meal at home at the end of a long, hard day, or eat an unhealthy but easier one at a fast food restaurant. If choice is what we do, then "choice" cannot explain why we choose.

Research now shows fast food meets at least some definitions of addiction.

Add on to this that companies most heavily promote their least healthy foods, and that the least healthy foods are also the least expensive, and then you better understand why people choose these foods.

Take this Paris Hilton ad for the "Monster Thick Burger."

Now personally, this makes me NOT want to eat it. I mean, I want to stay as far away from that as possible!














The point of this post is that food companies are promoting products that they know will kill more and more of us. Not only here. But all over the globe.

And since anything can be a crime, maybe this should be.

  1. Promoting fast food as a crime? That is an interesting concept and I think a rather plausible one. Given the current state of Americans having that highest obesity rate and dying as a result, it makes sense to begin prosecution from the source---the fast food locations. It is true the unhealthiest foods are practically shoved into our faces every day on TV, driving down the street, and in movies. The unhealthiest foods are also the cheapest and easiest to obtain. This also creates a social issue. The media often tries to associate obesity with the frames of 'blocked opportunities' and 'social break down'. In other words the media frames the story to emphasize lower class obesity problems. Although factually this may not be false, it certainly fails to address the real problem--which is not society or community problems but instead the fast food institutions themselves.

The problem here I think is how the media portrays advetisments especially about fast food restaurants but lets keep in mind that the media cares only about their profit $$$, they dont care about our health. Just look at Parris Hilton doesn't she look lean eating that double thik hamburger? probably she didn't even took a bite from it, because she knows it is unhelthy, but the media makes it look healthy, convenient, affordable, and don't forget the dollar menu from Macdonals and others..
    I am not trying to make advertisemnets about fast food reastaurants, but I have seen them so many times..But the media doesn't focus a lot on this problems it shoul be a crime...but rememebr thay are getting a ot of money from this companies.
    Last but not least, if our kids in america are getting bigger and bigger is not only for the media, fast food restaurants, but also the parents some how..

  3. I believe unhealthy eating is a big part of habits and convenience. If McDonald's is on the way home from work and you're hungry after a long day's work, you're going to stop there. Most people don't want to come home after a long day's work and cook a meal that will be eaten in 5-10 minutes. But it's all about making that commitment to eat healthy and get into good eating habits. There's nothing wrong with stopping to get a tasty big mac once or twice a week but if you make a daily habit of it and do nothing about it, such as exercise, it can lead to a big eating problem. But there's no need for people to hate fast food or get mad at companies like McDonald's because it's a business and it's the advertiser's job to get people to buy their products. And let me just add, it's pretty sexy seeing an attractive girl chomping into a big juicy double bacon cheeseburger. yum!

  4. The article illustrates corporate crime because they are promoting the most unhealthy foods at their cheap prices. In class, we discussed that the CDC reported 300,000 deaths per year are due to poor diet and inactivity. The fast food companies know that these foods are very unhealthy but they still promote them. Corporate and white collar crimes make up the elite deviance and are more dangerous than street crime. This illustrates that the corporations can reach a greater amount of people and can impact more people's lives. People in society do have a choice about what they eat but many people base a great deal of their choices on advertisements. Unfortunately, the youth of America are being impacted. The corporation is trying to use a well known celebrity to promote their food. People may be naive enough to think that if Paris Hilton eats the monster thick burger then they should too. I look at it as false advertisement because people who eat unhealthy foods like the monster thick burger don't have skinny body types like Paris Hilton. People need to remember that large corporations care about making a profit and people in society need to be concerned with staying healthy.
