The realities of terrorism

How many American civilians were killed in 2009?

In the WHOLE world?

50,000?

25,000?

10,000?

5,000?

1,000?

500?

100?

How about 27?

So says the State Department in this annual analysis of victims of terrorism around the world.

I provide these data just for context or perspective, since media coverage of terrorism is so prevalent.

Even in 2001, which saw the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history, there were less Americans killed than have been subsequently killed in the US response. In other words, our wars have killed more of us than al-Qaeda did.

And we suprassed that number in September 2006, only five years after the 9/11 attacks.

Amazing, but true.

  1. I think that the Patriot Act was passed because the American people were in fear of their lives because of the media made it seem like a terrorist was your neighbor or they were around every corner. I have traveled to other countries that see terrorist acts (domestic and foreign) every year. One time i read in Pakistan a terrorist blew up a bus full of people with an RPG and it was horriffic the paper said that bodies and body parts were all over the road. They were so used to this that they had another bus to take the spot of that same bus and cleaned it up that same day and i didnt see anymore about it. If that happened here we would be seeing pictures of it on every news paper and someone would say something about the incident on every mainstream of the news. 9/11 was a terrible thing, but it happened and there isnt anything that we or anyone else can do about it now but i think that the terrorists are a bunch of weak, poor people that cant get bombs to go off in their shoes, underwear or any other part of their bodies.
