Nothing like jails sitting empty as a reminder of how stupid we are

America's incarceration binge is unparalleled in world history.

And we are only now realizing the economic drain it ultimately creates in our country.

But this is ridiculous.

Correctional facilities sitting empty because there's not enough money to incarcerate people.

  1. This story is a shock to me. I have heard so much data about how many people are in prison, and how crowded prisons are, and to hear this is surprising. The other part of this that is truly hard to read is that these people are hoping for people to be put in prison. I understand that this prison is a main source of income and employment for this area, but as a nation, we should never find ourselves hoping for people to break the law, to be imprisoned.
What needs to happen here is for the government to step in and offer some assistance to this area, to at least show them possible ideas that they could try.
I believe that this shows us a great example of how the media can make any story seem like it is nationwide, causing the general population to believe them. They have taken a problem that does exist and made it seem to be everywhere, possibly causing people to have the wrong idea about prisons in general, and maybe even having a direct influence on the workings of the prisons in this system.
The media seem to never think about the consequences of what they are saying and how it affects EVERYBODY, not just the rich people who own them.
