This is the title of an article in the local newspaper.
From the article:
"While small fluctuations from year to year make it difficult to discern overarching trends, 2010 was a calmer year for law enforcement throughout the county when looking only at the number of calls for service received.
The Boone Police Department charted 11,339 calls for service in 2010, down about 5.6 percent from 2009, according to data provided by the department ... But fewer calls for service don't necessarily equate to less crime."
Well duh.
And you simply cannot discern crime trends from police data anyway. Police data miss the "dark figure of crime." Take the crime of rape as a great example. Does anyone really think there were only 8 rapes in all of Boone last year?
Boone includes Appalachian State University. Need I say more?
