A snapshot of the death penalty in NC

Historically, North Carolina has been one of the most active death penalty states in the nation.

We're no TEXAS, but we've been in the top 10 in the number of death sentences every year, the number of executions every year, and the size of our death row.

Yet, our last execution was in August 2006 and 2010 saw only four new death sentences.

Because of a confluence of factors, support for the death penalty is weakening in the state.

Here is an excellent snapshotof the issues and facts. In short, people are concerned about racial bias, innocence, and cost. And all of this stems from the studies done in the state showing racial bias, wrongful convictions, and a higher cost for executions than even life imprisonment.

  1. I don't believe in the Death Penalty. If the state is convicting people for murder how is it ok for them to turn around and sentence them to death? I think it is hypocrytical for the state to determine whether another human life should be taken away. Although I do not agree with the actions of criminals that are being considered for capital punishment, I do not think the state should put their lives in its hands. There have been cases where later evdivence shows innocent of someone wrongfully convicted. You can not come back from death, you can however, get out of prison from a life sentence.

  2. We'll also examine the death penalty in class, too. The real death penalty is pretty shocking actually.
